Coathook Cannon
OBJECTIVE
The objective is to use a "physical pendulum" to launch a
projectile and hit a target distance. Teams of 1 to 3 students
can enter this event.
THE RULES:
-
Competitors must use one of four cannons provided.
-
The projectile is a steel ball with a hole drilled through the center to accommodate launch from the cannon.
-
Launch of the projectile occurs when the cannon swings and encounters a
crossbar.
-
The launch angle will be given.
THE COMPETITION:
-
Each team will draw a target distance.
-
Teams will have ten minutes for calculations before their shot.
-
Each team will be allowed two shots
-
The projectile must be drawn back and released from between thumb and forefinger of the competitor.
-
The sum of the variance distance from the target distance will be your score.
-
The lowest score wins.
The moment of inertia of the four "cannons" shown above
(in 10-2 Kg*m2) are respectively:
1.56
2.90
5.14
9.31
